Mid-Autumn Festival Lanterns Light-Up at Chinatown 2015 - SG50 Edition

A total of 2,300 lanterns line the streets of Chinatown for the annual light-up. The centrepiece is a 12m-tall and 6m-wide Merlion lantern, facing Upper Cross Street, adorned by the national flower Vanda Miss Joakim and the Aranda Lee Kuan Yew.
We had dinner at Tiong Shian Porridge before the official lanterns light-up ceremony.

Deep-fried intestines.  We both prefer braised ones.
Frog legs cooked with ginger and spring onions in claypot to go with our porridge.

 The emcee - Sebastian Tan
There were lanterns of old iconic playgrounds of Singapore.

Didn't manage to get any good shot of the fireworks as our view was quite bad.
We then went over to Mei Heong Yuen for some desserts.

Green Tea Show Ice.
 Walnut paste.

 Singapore icons/ mascots...
We had Garden by the Bay in lantern form here as well.

The lanterns will be on display at Chinatown until 12 October 2015.

LICK - Little Ice-Cream Kafe @ Tanjong Katong Road

Had a mini gathering with my secondary classmates at LICK which stands for Little Ice-Cream Kafe.

It was a small shop with a few different styles of furnitures.
They have more than 30 varieties of home-made ice-cream.
I spotted a "Kaya Toast" Ice-Cream but was not daring enough to try.  I just went for the safer choices such as Lychee and Mao Shan Wang!
 Lychee and Mao Shan Wang
We all love these two flavours, lychee was so refreshing and the sweetness was just right.  Mao Shan Wang was superb.
 Coffee and Avocado
These two scoops pales in comparison to the above.  To be fair, it was probably because I had the stronger flavoured Mao Shan Wang before eating the avocado ice-cream so I couldn't really taste the avocado flavour.
The waffle was very tasty!  Fluffy with a slight crisp.  Would love to come back here again to try out other flavours.... maybe kaya toast?  or lavendar?

Maccha House 抹茶館 @ Orchard Central

After having a great meal at Kuriya Penthouse, we did some window-shopping around the mall before settling down at Maccha House for some desserts.  It had been quite a while that we had not stepped into Orchard Central.
My friend Sam, ordered Matcha Ice Cream Anmitsu ($7.90) which was served with azuki, jelly and tangerine.  The set came along with brown tea too.  Sam commented that this was quite nice and fortunately, she didn't really put in all the green tea sweet syrup into her dessert.  It came really useful to me when I had my share of dessert later on.
My other friend, Pauline ordered a Mixed Dorayaki ($9.90).  We were all shocked when this was served.  Not only it was huge, it didn't look like the photo of the dorayaki presented in the menu.  There was lots of whipped cream which Pauline didn't like and the whole presentation looked rather messy.
Pauline also ordered Green Tea Soda ($2.40 for Regular) and she commented it was the most bitter soda she ever had in her life!  Haha....
I thought of having something simple so I ordered Matcha Soy Milk Pudding ($5.90).  The texture was very firm and not the common bouncy type of pudding.  However, the dessert was also very very bitter!  After I poured the whole  mini-cup of sweet syrup into my pudding, I also took Sam's syrup and poured everthing into it!

Dessert Hut 甜品小屋 @ People's Park Centre

After having a hearty meal at Spring Court restaurant, we took a slow walk over to People's Park Centre.  We had dessert at "Dessert Hut 甜品小屋".  This place seemed to be very popular and had expanded to the shopfront opposite as well.  Despite the expanded space, it was still difficult to find a seat as almost all the tables were occupied at 3pm on a weekend.  On the other hand, "Tong Shui" cafe, also selling dessert, was rather empty.  I am not sure why.  Pricing?  Taste?
Hubby ordered yam with black glutinous rice, something that I would like to have if I were not so full.  Although what was served looked very different from that in the menu, it tasted quite good still.
Brother and I both ordered Egg Beancurd with Mango.
Dad ordered Mango Sago but he put aside all the shaved ice onto another plate.  Mum ordered chendol and she was all thumbs up for that.
This mid-autumn festival's centerpiece looks quite weird right?  A hybrid of grape and chilli?

Honeymoon Dessert 满记甜品 @ 112 Katong

After a very satisfying dinner at Le Viet, we proceeded to the basement of 112 Katong to have our dessert fix. We decided to try out "Honeymoon Dessert". There was some form of promotion going on as it was newly opened.  If I remember correctly, it was something like buy 2 get 1 free. I had tried Honeymoon Dessert in Hong Kong and is happy that we can now have this nice dessert place in Singapore.
The pancakes were presented differently from that of Hong Kong.
You can check out the Hong Kong version here.

The Beauty of Thai Look Choob

I had just signed up for a hands-on session with People's Association (onePA) to learn how to make the beautiful fruit-shaped or vegetable-shaped Thai dessert made of green bean paste.  So looking forward to the workshop tomorrow and I will share more about it after attending the workshop!  :D
Have a Nice Weekend Everyone!!  Yay!!

Updated on 13 May 2012:  I had attended the workshop and it was fun!  It was like an art and craft workshop too because we also learnt how to shape 11 different fruits/ veggie with the green bean paste and also added colouring to them.  I had not attended cooking classes from PA since 2008.  With the advancement in technology, almost all the participants who attended the workshop were equipped with cameras or handphones to take photos or even video-record the teacher's demonstration.  The teacher didn't seem to mind and at the start of the lesson, she wanted us to take photo of the beautiful look choob that she had prepared in advance - shown in my opening photo for this post.  Very beautiful right?

Ingredients for making the look choob.

 Our teacher

Each table will get a tray of colourings and paintbrushes.  Seem like an Art lesson right?
Done by teacher.  We have hands-on session after each demonstration.
After we had "painted" our look choob, the teacher helped us to dip them into the heated agar agar.  This step is important as it will add a gloss the the texture.
 This was done by moi.
 Our work table.
Brought my creation back home to share with hubby. :)
