A Weekday Dinner at Magic Wok

Hubby fetched me from work and we went to Downtown East for our dinner.  Decided to settle at Magic Wok as Thai food is always very appetizing.  Hubby ordered stir-fried kuay teow and the dish was sweet.  They were very generous with the eggs too.
I ordered vermicelli, lesser eggs though.  But it was still good :)

Lunch at Magic Wok @ E-Hub!

Lunch with my parents on Mothers' Day itself.  The cake that I ordered online was finally delivered after one day delay.  They couldn't cope with the overwhelming response and many customers couldn't get their Mothers' Cakes on time.  :(

The restaurant was pretty crowded but we managed to get our seat quite fast.

Phad Thai
Fried Rice
Olive Rice
Steamed Fish
Pandan Chicken
This is the Mothers' Cake that I ordered online - A project by "Operation Smile"

Buddy Hoagies @ E-Hub!

Sunday lunch with hubby at Buddy Hoagies at E-Hub!  Although this restaurant has been around for quite some time already, this was our first visit here.  I think this place is very popular with families with kids.  While we were there around noon, almost 3 tables were occupied with kids!
Root Beer Float
We topped up $3.70 for Mushroom Soup with Garlic bread and a cup of hot tea.  The mushroom soup seemed to be a bit diluted.
My order - Their signature Rosti with Sausage
Hubby ordered honey pork-ribs which comes with 2 choices of sides.  However, he ordered 2 portions of coslaw.
See!  So many kids around.... Guess they like the western food here.
The food here was quite ok but service was very very slow.  We waited for almost half an hour for our food to arrive although the restaurant was not really very crowded.  They also offer $9.90 set lunch.

ALIVE Gallery @ Downtown East, Dinner at Lemongrass

Met up with the gals today at Downtown East to visit the Alive Gallery which will be ending on 3 Oct.  With MOE pass, we paid $11 each (Minimum purchase:  4) instead of the usual price at $17.  Actually, for teachers, we could have gone for this exhibition free during the Teachers' Day week but we missed it due to our busy schedule.  For NTUC club members, you will get to enjoy a few dollars off too.
While waiting for Ruijun, the 3 of us took some photos outside the exhibition halls.
Mona Lisa waving at us :)
Lijuan saw the following painting and an idea struck her.  She asked Shili to pose like the lady in green.  Haha...
After visiting the exhibition, we got to realize that the lady in green was not pregnant as what we had thought.  In fact, they were having their wedding ceremony being witnessed by the person in the mirror.  Oops!  We had interpreted the painting wrongly.
The "Alive" journey started off with some ancient Egyptian drawings on papyrus including animations and ended with some abstract art.  Of course, in between, there are many interesting paintings/ art exhibits with detailed explanations.  I had learnt many valuable lessons along the way :)

Somewhere near to the entrance, there is a 3D show on Apollos, Hermes, Venus and Nike.  We wore the 3D glasses and saw the 4 gods/ goddesses came to life and interacting with one another.  Oh yah, the brand "Nike" and "Hermes" are the names of gods.  Venus is a goddess associated with beauty and love.  In the show, she claimed that she had the perfect waist to hip ratio at 1: 1.168

I am sure many of you had seen the interactive Mona Lisa from the news.  All you need to do is to ask her questions and she will answer accordingly.  We were wondering whether there was a person behind the painting who was doing all the answering of the questions.

There is also this 'Spot the Meaning' game using the Netherlandish Proverbs painting.  This one was rather interesting and the kids as well as adults will like it.

Another highlight is Leonardo Da Vinci's "The Last Supper" where all the characters in the painting also come "alive"!  Also not forgetting Michelangelo's "The Sistine Chapel Ceiling Fresco".

No photography and videography is allowed except for the following 2 photo-taking points.  Anyway, I had forgotten to bring my camera and all photos here were taken with Iphone which explains why the photos are so pixelated in dim light condition.

Both Ruijun and I wore green top today! and shorts!  Haha..
I am in the "painting"!
Van Gogh's "Cafe Terrace at Night"
Another framed "painting" with Shili and myself inside, and 2 other kids at the back
The exhibition was rather interesting but I thought it may be a bit too high level for kids although many of the paintings come with explanation/ animations.

After spending almost 2 hours at the exhibition, we decided to have our dinner together at Lemongrass Restaurant.  The 4 of us all ordered warm lemongrass drink.
Pomelo Salad
Seafood Tom Yam Soup
Pandan Chicken
Pineapple Rice (Small)
Sliced fish with Mango
Another happy day spent with good friends :)

Hubby's 34th Birthday!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

29 Jun (Tue): My hubby's Bday.... Too bad the wife does not know how to bake cake and have never attempted to bake a cake, so this year as usual, the husband will get a cake that the wife bought from the cake shop :P
Chocolate Addiction from Emicakes (Downtown East)
I love chocolate cake!!!
At least there is a birthday cake this year.  Last year, I substituted the cake with a box of durian puffs (also from Emicakes)... with candles on them so that he could make a wish and blew the candles too!
This year, he made a serious wish....
and here is us!  I ran a few rounds before I could take a decent photo of us together using self-timer.
On the following weekend, I also treated him to Dozo at River Valley Point.  Did I say my treat?  I suddenly remember that I had not paid him for the meal!  Hahahaha!
That will be my next post!

The Basil Inn @ Downtown East

We were officially off duty at 12.30pm on Wednesday and I left school at 1pm for lunch. Tired and sick of canteen food, I decided not to have lunch in school on Wednesday. Since we could go off early, I decided to go Downtown East to place an order for Mother's Day cake at Emicakes and to have my lunch there as well. Walking around downtown east aimlessly looking for food, I spotted this small eatery "The Basil Inn" near Cheers. Scanning through the menu, they have 1-dish meal at an affordable price so I decided to give it a try. I ordered a plate of Phad Thai which cost $4.50 nett. Think this eatery was owned and run by 2 Thai aunties as I could hear them talking to each other in Thai. Thus, the food must be authentic right? Hmmm...   Here comes my plate of Phai Thai, doesn't look very appetizing but tastewise, it was really quite good.  However, the peanuts had gone soft and this had somehow spoiled the taste of the whole dish.
The place is quite small and you could see the auntie whipping up the dishes in the small little kitchen just behind the door.  Also, there is no air-conditioner here and can get a bit stuffy especially in hot afternoons like these few days when the average temperature is around 34 degree celsius.  Therefore, it is not really a good idea to have spicy Thai food in a hot afternoon.
Read about this eatery at HGW and realize it receives many good reviews from many people about their good food and affordability.  Maybe can try out the other dishes next time with hubby....  Erm... maybe at night when it is cooler.

Yumen Hut @ Downtown East

I got to know about this shop from a Channel U variety show. The owner of Yumen Hut owned a noodle factory and if I am not wrong, he also invented the 2-ply noodles. The noodles are very colourful (green, yellow, orange etc) as they are made of different coloured vegetable extract such as carrot, spinach, pumpkin.  His noodles are all made of 100% vegetable extract with no artifical colour and preservative.  Thus, if you are on a healthy diet, you can come here more often. Price is very affortable, range from $3.80 to $4.50 per dish. To our muslim friends, this stall is also halal certified.

I ordered the pumpkin noodles in pasta sauce. Frankly speaking, I would prefer my spaghetti in pasta sauce as it is more "q". Anyway, here is my plate of pumpkin noodle with very simple ingredients that you can prepare it yourself at home:

You can cook your own healthy noodles by buying the dry noodles "Oodles" which come in 3 delicious flavours: sesame and pandan, soya and pumpkin , spinach and paprika and bring them home to cook in your own style!
