Charly T's @ 112 Katong

I was invited to a food tasting session at Charly T's at 112 Katong to try out Charly T's new Weekend Free Flow Sliders & Beer promo.  I also brought my friend, Sam along for the tasting session.  Other than the sliders, we also got to try Charly T's Original Recipe 'Best Chicken in the City' which was served with 2 side dishes - Macaroni & Cheese and German Potato and some of their desserts.  Other sides that you can order are Steamed Fresh Vegetables and Butter Garlic Rice.

The Macaroni and Cheese is different from what is normally served in other places.  It uses a recipe from award-winning Chef Rozanne Gold’s “Eat Fresh Food” cookbook - it contains less cheese and includes fresh cauliflower.  Charly T's has received Rozanne's authorization to use her recipe in the restaurant. What's unique about this recipe is that it was created with the help of her Sous chefs, all aged between 9 to 19 and under the guidance of nutritionist Helen Kimmel, who has worked with Rozanne on all her books.  Their goal was to create recipes that were delicious, real and healthy.
The signature "Best Chicken in the City" (Half chicken with 2 sides at $24.00+) didn't fail us.  It was indeed one of the best roasted chicken that I ever had.  The meat was succulent and tender.  Charly T’s Original Recipe, free-range chickens are marinated for over 13 hours before being slow-cooked rotisserie style to achieve its tender and juicy texture.  It was served with 3 types of sauces - BBQ sauce, hot sauce and sesame sauce  Highly recommended!
This is the new weekend promotion, offering free-flow sliders that comes in a choice of Juicy Beef or Schnitzel-style Chicken, fries and bottled Budweiser beer at $38+ from 12 to 3pm.
We were served with a set of sliders and some fries first.  As Sam doesn't take beef, I tried the beef slider first.
The well-marinated beef patty from the beef slider was thick and very juicy.
We ordered another 2 chicken sliders  (Remember, it is a buffet!!!) after that and I also got to try the chicken slider.  The 3 pieces of thin crispy Schnitzel-style Chicken sandwiched between the buns were very tasty and fragrant.  It was really a delight to have.

Other than beer, we also ordered fruit juices from their CT's Odyssey juices selection.  ($7+ each). Sam had the Green Flash, a concoction of green apple, orange and pineapple juices and I had the Red Tang, containing strawberry, cranberry and lychee, with a very sweet presentation and was refreshing.
After we were quite done with the mains, we moved on to order the desserts.  I decided to be a bit more adventurous by ordering something that we had not tried before - Kaiserchmarrn ($16+).  It is a light, caramelized pancake made from a sweet batter using flour, eggs, sugar, salt, and milk, baked in butter.  At Charly T's, raisins are added to the pancakes and also served with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream.  We had requested for reduced portion for the tasting session.  The actual portion is meant to be shared between 2 pax.  The pancakes were quite fluffy but be warned that this dish is quite filling to end off as a dessert!

Molten Cake ($10+) was served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The cake was very dense and flavourful although it the chocolate didn't flow out as we cut it.

Homemade Ice Cream Sandwich ($8+), Vanilla ice cream sandwiched in between two huge cookies. The cookies were quite hard and difficult to cut through.  After a while, when we were sampling the other desserts, we realized the the ice-cream had melted.  The cookies were soaked with the molten ice-cream and it was easier to eat the softened cookies.  Not too bad.
We continued our makan feast until 3pm when most of the patrons had left.  Afterwhich, we took a few photos of the restaurant's setting.
The restaurant is a family friendly place whereby there is a colourful and vibrant corner for the kids to have fun or watch video.  The cartoon movie "Up" was screened during the time when we were there for our lunch.
Open-concept kitchen where you can find the chefs preparing the food and also see Charly T’s rotisserie‐style “Best Chicken in the City” during their roasting process.

Overall, we were very satisfied with the quality of food served at Charly T's.  Thanks Charly T's and Foodnews for this invitation.

Honeymoon Dessert 满记甜品 @ 112 Katong

After a very satisfying dinner at Le Viet, we proceeded to the basement of 112 Katong to have our dessert fix. We decided to try out "Honeymoon Dessert". There was some form of promotion going on as it was newly opened.  If I remember correctly, it was something like buy 2 get 1 free. I had tried Honeymoon Dessert in Hong Kong and is happy that we can now have this nice dessert place in Singapore.
The pancakes were presented differently from that of Hong Kong.
You can check out the Hong Kong version here.

Le Viet @ 112 Katong

Dad recommended this place for our family dinner as he had been here for a gathering with his old pals a month back, and he said the Vietnamese food was authentic and good.

Food Republic @ 112 Katong - Bringing the Best of Local Fare

The following are the 16 dishes that we gobbled up last Saturday at Food Republic at 112 Katong. We can now find more of Singapore's favourite local delights in this new Food Republic.

Thye Hong Fried Prawn Noodle
Fried Hokkien Mee
Thye Hong has a history of over 40 years.  They serve its fare on Opei leaves specially imported from Malaysia and Indonesia.  The leaf infuses a subtle, wood fragrance to enhance the taste of the noodle.  I love the gravy, it was very tasty and of course, I always like to eat the fried hokkien mee with the accompanied chilli to give it an extra kick.

Thye Hong was hand-picked by the Singapore Tourism Board to showcase his Char Kway Teow as one of our nation's most celebrated local specialities at the Culinary Institue of America in California.  I would definitely like to try the Char Kway Teow and Fried Oyster Omelette for this stall in the near future.

Yong Soon You Tiao
You Tiao (Fried dough fritters)
This trade was started by Mr Low's grandfather over 20 years ago.  Mr Low continued the trade and picked up the skill of making thee savoury treats.  You Tiao is one of my favourite food for breakfast.  The "You Tiao" (Fried Dough Sticks) here are all freshly fried at the stall and it is nice to consume them when they are cripsy and hot.

The other specialties are the Butterfly fritters and Xian Jian Bing (Deep-Fried Salty Fritters). The Xian Jian Bing comes with new exciting flavours such as coffee, pandan, red and green bean. Muslim friends will be glad to know that these dough fritters are certified Halal.

Fu Lin Tofu Yuen
7 pcs set with noodles
This stall serves Hakka Yong Tau Foo which is something new to me. After choosing those Yong Tau Foo that you want, they will be cooked cripsy upon order and served with their specially made minced chicken mushroom sauce and chilli. You can also order a bowl of their speciality minced chicken mushroom gravy with noodles to go with the Yong Tau Foo.

Fu Lin Tofu Yuen started in 1994 in the East Coast area to provide a different kind of Hakka Yong Tau Fu. Now, you are still able to get the authentic Fu Lin Tofu Yuen here at 112 Katong Food Republic.

Li Xin Teochew Fishball Noodle
We sampled this bowl of Mee Pok (Dry).
Simply love!  These fishballs were soft and "bouncy"!
Li Xin's fishballs are made with yellowtail only and kept chilled in cold water but never frozen, and made twice daily.  Li Xin also make their own chilli sauce and crispy lard pieces.

Owner Eddie Lim, son of founder Lim Lee Seng, says that this method of making the fishballs has been used since his father's time since 1968.

Huat Huat BBQ Chicken Wing
The barbecued chicken wings are succulent and juicy. Do try it with their chilli sauce. Huat Huat BBQ also has a histroy of over 20 years.

Dapur Padang
We had Nasi Kuning Set which is an Indonesian rice dish cooked with coconut milk and tumeric (thus the rice is yellow).

The presentation here signifies the mountain (rice in conical shape - tumpeng) as origin of this dish, Indonesia is a very mountainous region. You can choose the other dishes that you like to be placed at the sides of the rice. I tried the rice, it was really very fragrant.

Side dishes....

Cho Kee Wanton Noodle
Spinach Noodle
This is one of my top picks amongst all the food that I had sampled.
Fried Dumplings
Very springy noodles. These were spinach noodles and they also have carrot, beetroot and seaweed noodles specially created for Food Republic at 112!
Cho Kee Noodle started the wanton noodles trade in Old Airport Road in 1965. Another stall with a rich history.

Formosa Delights
Dao Xiao Mian (Beef)
With the open-kitchen concept, you might sometimes be able to see the chef slicing the white dough right in front of a boiling pot. The sliced white dough will "fly" through the air and go straight to the pot.

Bangkok Gem
Phad Thai with Prawns
I normally like Phad Thai that is dry and topped it with lots of crushed peanuts.

Ju Shin Jung Korean Cuisine
We sampled the Mixed Vegetable Rice in Hot Stone.
This dish has a very nice presentation as well with a nice egg yolk right at the centre, sprinkled with some white sesame seeds on top.
Of course, you cannot miss this if you are having Korean food!  Kimchi!!

Ah Yip Herbal Soup
Herbal Duck Drumstick Soup Noodles
The duck meat was quite tender and it was easy to tear the meat from the bone.

Herbal Soups at Ah Yip take more than10 hours to prepare. It was established in 1993 with the objective to help to keep people healthy. The founder, Mr Cheng Keng Yip, was a physician for more than 10 years. Based on his expertise and knowledge in Chinese Herbs, he specially created a range of herbal soups that capitalizes on the efficacy of herbs.
Chef from "The Song of India"

Butter Chicken with Garlic Naan

Everything that Melissa ate seemed extremely delicious. Do not underestimate her petite size! She can eat the whole naan by herself!
Fragrant Hot Pot
This one might not suit everyone as I can already feel the "numbness" on my tongue although I just tried a small piece of veggie. Take it only if you can take super spicy stuff, otherwise, you might not get to enjoy this. All the ingredients that you choose will be stir-fried with their special "Ma La" sauce, made from over 20 different herbs and spices.

Originated from Beijing, the Fragrant Hot Pot is widely popular with Chinese nationals here.

Pepper Lunch
Pepper steak
This one needs no further introduction. You can cook your own foo the way you like it and I like to drizzle it with a lot of honey brown sauce.

This is one of the mini restaurants found in Food Republic 112.

Wee Nam Wee Chicken Rice
Chicken Rice with Dumpling Set
This is the other mini restaurant found here.
Wee Nam Kee Hainanese Chicken Rice Flagship store is located at 275 Thomson Road. Its succulent steamed and roasted chicken rice were voted the best hawker at the AsiaOne People's Choice Awards 2010. The restaurant was also invited by the Prime Minister's Office to participate at its Singapore Day in Shanghai.

We rounded up our hearty meal with Chendol from Ice Shop for desserts. The Chendol was served in tall glasses. The chendol remined me of my failed quest for Chendol 88 during my trip to Malacca last week. The taste was alright, not too sweet but somehow, I still prefer my chendol to be served in a bowl and eaten with just a spoon. Ok, other than chendol, you have over 15 cold and 5 hot selections that you can choose from here. Definitely a perfect sweet ending to any meal.
Can you see them waving at you??  "DRINK ME!!"
My tall glass of Chendol.
I would like to take the opportunity to thank OMY.SG and Food Republic for the invite so that I got a chance to sample all these great local fares and international cuisine.

Check out this link at OMY for the other 11 bloggers' experience at the Food Republic food tasting event.
